Locked & Loaded Spiritual Cleaning Techniques (2025 Edition)

Writer's picture: @HighKingDabbie@HighKingDabbie

Locked & Loaded, no negativity around you or me shall prosper! It’s been quite some time since my last blog post, especially on CLEANING TECHNIQUES! Here is a more detailed, a more thorough, and also a more abbreviated guide to cleansing yourself. There is always quick easy ways to cleanse yourself, and when you feel an extra boost or stronger cleanse is needed, feel free to reach out to me or your favorite practitioner (Hope it's me!). There should be NO EXCUSES AFTER THIS!

Since last we talked, I've published a book that addresses many of these topics and more while also providing spells and techniques on how to stay and keep yourself cleansed.

Check out my book, Foundations of Magic here and find it on Amazon here

If you're lazy or want extra help, be sure to check out my store since I offer a lot products to help with cleansing (Cleaning Service, Space Cleaner Candles, Happy Home Candle, Banishing Oil, Aura Cleanse Oil, and I occasionally list batches of Cleaning Candles)

Before we get into all of the cleaning techniques galore, I need to mention that the following is a list. I will be providing detail, but most of these can be researched, or you can take local classes, and learn about these things more in depth on your own time as plenty of information is out there)

I also need to mention and refer back to this old, but relevant, tweet:

First of all, this is the one thing I tell everyone to do because of its effectiveness in almost every situation:

Egg Cleanse Ritual - Effective and still Used at Every Skill Range

Sorry I have to talk about Meditation before I drop a bunch of spells for you, it is perhaps the most powerful and accessible tool for all forms of spirituality and energetic rebalancing. It allows us to connect with our inner selves, clear our minds of negative thoughts, and focus on the present moment. Regular meditation practice can help purify our physical body, mind, and energy (prana), so that we can immediately detect, track, and clear out negativity, imbalances, and toxicity. There’s plenty of Guided Meditations for releasing negativity, cutting cords, and cleansing that can be attempted, however I prefer cleansing through more hands-on techniques to ensure that every layer of the person is addressed. To spare you all, I will be short with this part because there’s tons of content online and classes available on this. If there’s anything I suggest with meditation, it is to meditate out in nature as it not only grounds you, but can cleanse you and bring you gnosis. Meditating by/in rivers, oceans, and waterfalls should prove to be extremely cleansing as well as restorative.

Sound healing is an ancient practice that harnesses the power of frequency to cleanse and realign our energy fields. This auditory alchemy employs a variety of tools—from resonant crystal bowls and precise tuning forks to the deep, reverberating tones of gongs—to create a symphony of healing vibrations.

At its core, sound healing works by entraining our brainwaves, gently guiding us from our everyday beta state into more relaxed and receptive alpha, theta, or even delta states. This shift in consciousness opens doorways to deep relaxation, internal healing, and spiritual transformation.

Throughout history, cultures worldwide have recognized the potent influence of sound on the human psyche. It's no coincidence that music is often described as a form of "hypnotic spell" or "magical incantation." Indeed, the power of sound to alter mind states and transform psyches is more than mere metaphor—it's a fundamental truth acknowledged by spiritual traditions across the globe who use it to call down and appease their Gods, spirits, and ancestors.

Sound can be a potent tool for cleansing spaces. Ringing a bell, clapping, laughing, or drumming can help break up stagnant or negative energy in a room. This technique is particularly useful for those who are sensitive to smoke or have allergies. I've talked a lot on X about shifting the energy in a space with just music and dancing alone.

Cleansing with the Sound of a Bell or Gong

Ancient traditions have long used the sound of bells, gongs, and drums to drive out negativity and reset spiritual energies. A simple method involves:

  • Ring a bell or use a Tibetan singing bowl to produce a resonating sound that vibrates through the space.

  • Move the bell or bowl around your body in a circular motion, starting from the head and moving toward your feet, visualizing the sound waves breaking up and releasing any negative or heavy energy.

  • If using a gong, stand close to it and allow the deep resonating tones to cleanse you, letting the vibrations wash over your entire aura.

From the rhythmic drumming of shamanic rituals to the ethereal chants of Gregorian monks, sound has been wielded as a tool to raise spirits, stir emotions, dispel negative energies, and shake loose stagnant thoughts. This universal recognition of sound's transformative power underscores its effectiveness as a spiritual cleansing technique.

Crystal Cleansing: Crystals are popular tools for spiritual cleansing nowadays so I will also be short here, they connect us to the earth's grounding and healing energies. Some crystals particularly suited for cleansing include:

  • Selenite: Known for absorbing negative energy and offering protection

  • Smoky Quartz: Excellent for cleansing electromagnetic and negative energy

  • Lepidolite: Helpful in cleansing the mind of cyclical and negative thoughts

You can use a Selenite wand to sweep over your body/aura to cleans and purify it. Same with the other crystals. Otherwise, they can be used in baths, washes, rituals, and spells as will be listed below.

Spiritual Baths: A spiritual cleansing bath can purify both our physical and subtle bodies. Adding Epsom salts and essential oils to your bath can help relax your nervous system and calm your mind. Remember, the most crucial element in any spiritual bath is your intention. Before entering the bath, take a moment to set your purpose clearly in your mind. As you soak, breathe deeply and visualize the water absorbing negative energy and replacing it with light and positivity. I’ve talked about doing shower magic a lot many years ago on Twitter, and still stick to everything religiously. Adding mantras, prayers, and affirmations to your showers are literally lifechanging. Showering is meditative, it’s trance-like, it's energetic, and therefore can be turned into a very spiritual practice.

For a more witchcraft approach, there are plenty of energetically cleansing bath recipes out there that require you to chant and pray over the water before getting in, or while bathing in it. Not to mention that Miss Tiffy’s Magical Soaps are still available in store here! Drawing a sigil or chanting over your soaps before using them on your body is also a simple yet seriously very effective technique. I highly recommend all of Miss Tiffy's products because of how easy they are to incorporate into your daily practice and the results that come with it.

Here are some additional recipes and rituals to enhance your spiritual bathing practice:

Epsom Salt and Essential Oil Blend

  • 2 cups Epsom salt

  • 1/2 cup baking soda

  • 10 drops lavender essential oil

  • 5 drops rose absolute essential oil

  • 5 drops of (pepper)mint essential oil

  • 5 drops of pine essential oil

Mix all ingredients and add to warm bathwater. Soak for 20-30 minutes, saying affirmations about releasing, removing, or washing away all negative energies, while visualizing negative energy being released from your body. Before you leave the bathroom, be sure to stop to feel and see the negative energies going down the drain and you being radiant and full of divine light.

Ayurvedic Cleansing Bath

  • Some freshly sliced ginger

  • Cracked Cinnamon sticks

  • Freshly sliced Turmeric (or a few TBSP of powdered Turmeric)

Mix herbs and add to bathwater. This blend is said to help balance doshas and promotes detoxification. According to Ayurveda, an imbalanced dosha leads to poor health and disease. Doshas are three types of energy patterns in the body that are central to Ayurveda; vata, pitta, and kapha.

Witchcraft Cleansing Bath

  • 1 cup sea salt or Epsom salt

  • 1 cup dried herbs (rosemary, lavender, sage)

  • 3-5 drops essential oil of choice

  • 1 smoky quartz crystal

Add ingredients to bathwater.

Before entering, light a white candle and chant:

"By water and herb, by salt and stone,

Cleanse my spirit, flesh, and bone."

Soak for 20 minutes, visualizing negativity being absorbed by the water, while seeing or feeling the fire purifying and burning away all impurities. I highly recommend playing Psalms (5, 10, 23, 91) from Youtube while doing this.

Full Moon Ritual Bath

  • 1 cup Epsom salt

  • 1/4 cup dried chamomile flowers

  • 3 bay leaves (fresh if possible)

  • 5 drops eucalyptus essential oil

  • 5 drops lavender essential oil

  • Some Lemon Slices or a little bit of Lemon Juice

  • Quartz Crystal

Prepare a bath under the full moon. As you soak, meditate on releasing what no longer serves you. Breathe it out. Once you feel clear, grab the quartz, hold it in your palms, visualize your intentions manifested for the lunar cycle ahead, say a few affirmations for it, and then step out of the shower and charge the quartz in the full moon.

Chakra Balancing Bath

  • 1 cup Himalayan pink salt

  • 7 drops of essential oils corresponding to each chakra

  • 7 small crystals associated with each chakra (that have been cleansed and charged)

Add ingredients to bathwater. As you soak, focus on each chakra, visualizing it being cleansed and balanced. I’m not going to get into the whole exercise here, so to learn more about how to do some basic Chakra Exercises, refer to my book Foundations of Magic (in store here or in Amazon here)

Mantras and Affirmations can be powerful tools for spiritual cleansing. Traditional Sanskrit mantras have been shown to positively impact mental and emotional well-being. Modern affirmations can also help train our thoughts in a more positive direction. In the realm of spiritual cleansing, the power of words stands as a formidable force. Mantras and affirmations, when wielded with intention and consistency, can become potent tools for transforming our mental landscape and energetic field. These verbal incantations serve as a bridge between the conscious and subconscious mind, allowing us to reprogram deeply ingrained thought patterns and beliefs.

Sanskrit is often referred to as the "language of the gods," and has been revered for millennia for its ability to create vibrational shifts within the body and mind. Scientific studies have begun to validate what ancient sages have long known: the recitation of Sanskrit mantras can have profound effects on our mental and emotional well-being.

  • "Om Mani Padme Hum" has been shown to induce a state of calm and reduce stress hormones in the body.

  • The Gayatri Mantra, it’s considered a supreme purification prayer that cleanses body, mind, and soul. It purifies negative emotions, improves concentration, and removes karmic bondages.

  • This is a Universal Healing Prayer recommended for space and energy cleansing.: “Om Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu.” Which means: May all beings in all the worlds be happy and peaceful.

  • The Mahamrityunjaya Mantra: "Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam, Urvarukamiva Bandhanan Mrityor Mukshiya Maamritat" This mantra is believed to create a protective shield of positive energies around the devotee

  • Pavamana Suktam which is a Vedic hymn is specifically used for purification. A key verse from it is: "Hiraṇyavarṇāḥ śucayaḥ pāvakā yāsu jātaḥ kaśyapo yāsvindraḥ" but I would recommend to play or chant the entire thing (easy search for it on Google).

Mantra’s do require a bit of repetition so feel free to play the tracks on repeat or keep chanting until you feel like you can chant anymore! Usually these verses are chanted 108x but I just say them about 1-12x each depending on how long the mantra is. The rhythmic repetition of these sacred sounds creates a resonance that aligns our energy centers and clears psychic debris.

While rooted in ancient practices, the use of affirmations has evolved into a powerful new-agey technique for spiritual cleansing, and though it seems weird sometimes - everyone in the community who has done it, has noticed the results. By consciously choosing and repeating positive statements, we can rewire our neural pathways and shift our energetic frequency.

If you’re not into mantras, try some of these affirmations:

  1. "I am constantly being purified by Divine Light, staying cleansed and clear from all negativity."This affirmation invokes the imagery of divine purification, assisting you to constantly wash away all negative influences.

  2. "Only positivity, happiness, success, and wealth continue to fill and surround my life."Once energy is cleared it’s important to fill the space with energy you want to attract and embody, focusing on abundance in all its desired forms, this affirmation helps to attract and amplify positive energies.

  3. "I immediately release all tension, trauma, stress, and negativity from my body."This statement acts as a command to your subconscious, assuring to initiate an energetic release of stored negativity.

Yoga postures (asanas) were originally created to cleanse and purify the body, mind, and energy in preparation for meditation. The practice creates internal heat through breath and postures, metaphorically burning through what no longer serves us. Yoga also helps release tension in the body, which often stores excess negative energy. Yoga poses are often named after the mythos surrounding Gods and Goddesses because they help channel, bring forth, worship, or harness certain energies and embodiments of those Gods(esses).

Several purifying and cleansing yoga techniques are accessible to beginners and can be practiced by most people:

(Check your local yoga classes and Youtube videos)

  1. Pranayama (Breathing Exercises):

    • Kapalabhati (Breath of Fire): A series of quick successive exhalations that cleanses the airways

  2. Asanas (Yoga Poses):

    • Forward Folds: Help release tension in the back muscles and promote relaxation

    • Twists: Aid in detoxification by massaging internal organs.

    • Sun Salutations: A flowing sequence that increases blood circulation and creates heat in the body

  3. Simple Practices:

    • Seated Easy Pose (Sukhasana): A grounding posture to end practice and connect with your inner self

    • Corpse Pose (Savasana): Promotes deep relaxation and helps release tension from the body

Smudging with sage is an ancient cleansing ritual practiced by many cultures. While sage is commonly used, other herbs and flowers also play significant roles in this sacred tradition. The smoke from burning sage is believed to strip bare, and clear negative energy from both spaces and individuals. However, smudging doesn't always require burning—fresh herb bundles can be rubbed, patted, or swept over someone's body or aura to release, remove, and transmute energy before being burned. Alternatively, the bundles can simply be discarded after use.

I recommend using any of these herbs: Rosemary, Palo Santo (endangered), Mint, Rue, White Carnations, Pine, Mint, White Sage, Basil

You can also burn incense, incense sticks, or resin on charcoal. I love using Dragon’s Blood although some people say it’s very strong, however, I find that it’s very useful in not only cleansing a space, but filling the space in. (Stay on the lookout for a Youtube Video on Dragon’s Blood). People also like to burn Frankincense and Myrhh, Sandalwood, and Agarwood incense for cleansing.

Remember that the herbs have to be dried if you’re choosing to burn it. While smudging is effective, it's important to be mindful of smoke sensitivities and fire safety when practicing this technique - trust me, you don’t want to be making the fire alarms go off in the entire apartment building while trying to cleanse yourself or your space.

The 5-Step Smudging Playbook

1. Set Your Intention + Name Specifics

You can start off with serious prayers, psalms, mantras, but have a few clearly defined intentions based on your experience in that space or desired energy for the space.

  • "Clear out all of yesterday's stress. Clear all old and stagnant energies."

  • "Remove all heavy, dense, negative emotions. Remove all unwanted energies from this space now."

  • "Immediately transmute all negative energy into the highest, happiest, positivity!"

2. Prep Your Space

  • Open windows (think of it as creating an "energy exit" so that the negativity can leave)

  • Clear a path for smoke to flow

  • Remove any flammable items nearby

3. Light Up (Safely!)

  • Prepare a fire safe dish to ash it into

  • Hold a smudging bundle at a 45-degree angle. If using sage, use one leaf at a time

  • Light the tip

  • Let it burn for a few seconds. Gently blow out the flame, so that the embers continue to burn.

4. The Smudging Dance

  • Move clockwise through your space

  • Wave smoke gently

  • Pay extra attention to:

    • Corners

    • Doorways

    • Technology areas

    • Mirrors

    • Rooms that have a lot of conflict/heavy/dense energies

5. Gratitude & Closure

Extinguish bundle in sand or fireproof dish. Sometimes the energy of a place can be stripped bare, so it’s important to also fill in the space with lighter energies. You can spray Florida Water (Buy in our Store), burn benzoin resin, sprinkle rose water, burn lavender.

  • Take a moment to appreciate the cleansed space

  • Optional: Ring a bell or drum to seal the ritual

Pro Tips:

  • Never leave burning sage unattended

  • Use your intuition

  • Have fun with the process!

Remember, smudging is a personal journey. There's no "perfect" way—just your way.

Floor Washes are absolute game changers, I like to always do floor washes for luck and positive house vibes (happy home), but that's only after I cleanse my space. Since this is about cleansing, I’m going to make a post specifically on cleansing floor washes (not the lucky ones).

Intent matters, so focus on your goal while mixing and mopping—visualize negativity leaving the space. Pair your washing ritual with bells, chanting, or music to enhance the spiritual clearing. I also highly suggest using different washes for specific times of year (e.g., spring cleaning, post-holiday reset). It’s super easy, ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE A SWIFFER, you can just keep pouring the wash onto the swiffer and get a nice quick layer over all of the floors. It doesn’t have to be a traditional mop, although those do get in deeper and the magic can tend to last longer because it seeps into all the little nooks and crannies. Always remember one last thing: The Final Sweep. Always finish by sweeping/mopping the energy out towards the front door for closure. Traditionally, you can open the front door, do the last sweep, and you can even say GOODBYE to it on its way out (in case it was invited in somehow, now you are formally telling it to GTFO). That’s what I do lol.

Here are some classic Spiritual Cleansing Wash Recipes (The first 2 recipes are from the classes that I teach on how to do/practice magic: Foundations of Magic Online Course found here)

Magical oils, such as the Aura Cleanse Oil featured on my website, are powerful tools for cleansing and spiritual maintenance. These oils go beyond simple purification—they are incredibly versatile and can be incorporated into many aspects of your spiritual practice. For instance, they can be applied directly to the body, where they not only cleanse but also infuse your energy field with protection and balance. Rubbing them onto pulse points, such as the wrists, neck, or the soles of the feet, can enhance your personal aura, helping you stay energetically grounded and clear throughout the day.

These oils are also perfect for use in spiritual baths. Adding a few drops to warm bathwater allows the oil to cleanse your physical and energetic bodies simultaneously, while its scent and energy invite relaxation and emotional release. The oil’s healing properties can help restore balance and rejuvenate you, washing away negativity and leaving you feeling renewed. You can also mix the oil into your lotions or moisturizers, creating a ritualistic self-care routine that keeps you cleansed and protected throughout the day, ensuring that you carry your intention with you wherever you go.

Beyond personal use, magical oils are excellent additions to candle spells and rituals. Whether you're anointing candles before lighting them for a ritual or adding a few drops to the wax during a spell, the oil helps focus the energy and intentions of your work. It can serve to amplify the potency of your magic, creating a stronger connection to your desires and intentions.

One unique technique involves using magical oils in combination with crystals. You can anoint a crystal with a cleansing oil and place it on your altar, charge it in the Sunlight + Moonlight, and carry it with you. The combination of the oil's purifying energy and the crystal's unique vibrational frequency creates a powerful synergistic effect, enhancing the cleansing process and making the crystal a cleansing tool. You can tell the crystal what to do and swipe it over your body/aura, or hold it over problematic areas to absorb the negativity out. Be sure to cleanse this piece often and throw it away if it breaks.

Another technique is to infuse your environment with the scent of the oil by using a diffuser or anointing your ritual space before meditation or spellwork, creating an energetically cleansed and sacred atmosphere.

Magical oils can also be used to bless and purify objects and tools in your practice. By anointing your altar tools, such as wands, pentacles, or ritual knives, with the oil, you align them with your intentions, ensuring that your instruments are spiritually cleansed and ready for use. This technique not only keeps your tools energetically pure but also enhances their effectiveness in your magical work.

As you can see, magical oils are a versatile, multi-purpose tool in your cleansing and spiritual toolkit, offering a simple yet powerful way to maintain spiritual hygiene and support your magical intentions in a variety of ways.

Some Other Cleansing Techniques

Sweeping Ritual (Broom Cleansing)

This old tradition involves sweeping away negative energies using an ordinary broom. While sweeping, visualize the broom sweeping away any stagnant or unwanted energy. To add more intention:

  • Before you begin, put some Cleansing oil (like sage or palo Santo) or waters (Holy Water, Florida Water) onto the Broom.

  • As you sweep each corner of the room, say a prayer or affirmation to clear and purify the space.

  • Sweep in a counterclockwise motion to banish negativity and then clockwise to bring in positive energy.

  • Never Sweep someone's feet or else you will sweep away their luck too.

Feather Sweep (Energetic Clearing with Feathers)

Feathers are often considered symbolic of freedom, spirit, and connection to higher realms. They are used in cleansing rituals to sweep away unwanted energies:

  • Take a white or black feather (associated with spiritual protection and clearing).

  • Sweep the feather across your body in gentle motions, starting from the crown of your head and sweeping downward to your feet. Use the side of the feather that is meant for pushing the wind away (think of when a bird is flying).

  • While sweeping, envision the feather brushing away spiritual heaviness and negative thoughts, allowing your aura to reset and realign.

Water and Reflection Cleansing

Water has long been a symbol of purification. Use this powerful natural element as a spiritual cleanser in two ways:

  • Mirror Water Ritual: Take a bowl of clear water, and while staring into it, hold a mirror in front of the water. Visualize any negative emotions or spiritual burdens leaving your body and being reflected into the water.

  • After performing the ritual, pour the water onto the earth (ideally somewhere sacred or outdoors) to release the energies.

Cleansing with Red Brick Dust or Brick Charcoal

A more ancient technique, especially used in African and Afro-Caribbean spiritual practices, involves using red brick dust or charcoal to cleanse yourself and your space.

  • Mix red brick dust with water and rub it into your hands, then sweep the dust across your entire aura in a sweeping motion, from the top of your head down to your feet.

  • Alternatively, using brick charcoal in a small bowl, let it smolder (not burn) while you meditate or perform a ritual for cleansing and transmutation of energy.

Each of these methods has been used for centuries across various cultures and traditions, with the power to not only cleanse negative energy but also fortify your spiritual protection, ensuring you stay grounded, clear, and connected to your higher self.

We have delved into various spiritual cleansing techniques to help purify your energy, space, and mind, protecting yourself from negativity. The focus is on accessible and effective methods like meditation, sound healing, crystal cleansing, spiritual baths, mantras, yoga, and smudging. Each technique offers a different approach to removing stagnant or toxic energies, promoting balance and well-being.

Meditation, particularly in nature, is highlighted as a foundational tool for energetic purification, while sound healing uses frequency to shift mind states and clear negative vibrations. Crystal cleansing connects with the Earth’s grounding energy, and spiritual baths enhance relaxation and detoxification. Additionally, mantras and affirmations work as verbal tools to cleanse the mind and create positive energetic shifts.

More traditional methods like smudging, using sage and other herbs, and floor washes are emphasized for their ability to clear spaces of negative energy. These rituals, when performed with focused intention and mindfulness, are powerful means of maintaining spiritual hygiene and inviting positive energy into your life.

Ultimately, this blog reinforces that spiritual cleansing is a deeply personal and transformative practice, addressing the main and more popular methods of cleansing. Whether you use one or a combination of these methods, they serve as tools for empowering your spiritual journey and maintaining a protective, balanced environment. The message is clear: maintain your energetic space as you would any other part of your life—with care, respect, and mindfulness.
